The number of links a page gets from its own site and which pages link to it matters. The home page is the most important on the site and so the pages that are linked to from the home page are also important.
5. Add Your Address to Every Page
Ideally, every page should have your address and phone number. This is helpful for users but it also reinforces your location to the search engines.
6. Claim Your Profile on Merchant Circle, Google Local Business Center, Yahoo Local, etc.
There are a huge number of yellow pages-like sites that allow you to update your business information for free. These sites get a lot of traffic and tend to rank well.
7. Get Links
Now none of the above stuff will work very well if you don’t have any links to your site. The big search engines look at links from other sites as a sign of quality and trust.
There are hundreds of ways to get links like writing articles for other sites, sending out press releases, adding your business info to social media sites, etc.
•Long term visibility Banner ads or paid search engine placement works for a while but once the market budget is depleted, the site disappears. Also consumers are more likely to purchase from a site ranked high in the search engine results than from an evidently placed advertisement.
•Familiarity with the company A web site having a high ranking means more people see the name of the company and become familiar with the company and its products, even if they haven’t made a purchase. A survey by NPD shows that consumers are twice as likely to recognize businesses ranked in the top three in search engine results than those appearing in banner ads.
•Targeted traffic Choosing the wrong keywords can be devastating to an SEO campaign. In many cases, the wrong theme words will produce good ranking but very poor traffic or the wrong type of traffic. Because these keywords are carefully selected the type of traffic generated is highly targeted.
•Affordability In comparison to banner ads, which cost between $2500 to $35000 a month and outsourced SEO plan costs as little as $600. It is because of these reasons that SEO provides a high ROI for most companies.
This is hardly new news, just a new look at the Webmasters’ SEO section at Google. As any of you that follow PageRank literature know, there is a debate amongst SEOs as to whether outlinking “drains” PageRank.
One side argues that in google’s white paperGoogle clearly sets the foundation for PageRank drain. The other side aruges that linking is part of the Web and to penalize for outlinking is absurd. (Note: PageRank drain is considered to be sitewide, not on a page by page basis.)
But in the second section at the bottom of the Google SEO page, Google states that “doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO’s other clients as well. Such doorway pagesdrain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.”
Looks like an admission of some sort of PageRank drain to me. However, it is important to note that they use the phrase “link popularity.” Can outlinking really reduce your backlinks, pretty much the only measure of link pop? Doubtful, but it’s interesting, nonetheless.
But before you run off to encode all your links, note that GoogleGuy has gone on record stating that it is rather easy to spot a domain hoarding PageRank. I believe him. It would be rather easy to spot a site with a very low (none?) outlink count and a huge backlink count. It just doesn’t look natural.

Brochure sites are very common. Their purpose is to act as an extension to a company's sales and marketing efforts. They usually "don't do anything" other than provide information to prospective buyers or clients with the hope that the company will be contacted by e-mail or phone for more information. On this site I include copies of my resume, samples of my work, and descriptions of some software tools I have created, but, as with all brochure sites, this site "doesn't do anything".
Communities
Web communities come in all sizes, but in all cases they bring together people that share a common interest. I'm part of several software development communities. Years ago when I owned an aquarium, I visited aquarium related web sites for information and tips on how best to care for my fish. Sometimes web communities are run by people who are also looking to sell products or services. However, if the community doesn't contain useful and timely information, then any sales pitches will be likely fall on deaf ears. Tricking people in to buying something might work once or twice, but it's more effective to build trust and provide value.
Portals
Portals, as the name implies, act as gateways to information from various sources. The goal behind a portal is provide relevant information to user's without requiring the user to spend a lot of time searching. Ideally the information gathered is tailored to the visitor.
An example of this type of site is a corporate intranet portal which brings together documents and resources from many departments within the company. This can be particularly helpful when a company has many offices around the country or world. Employees of the company are then able to search for company related information that other employees have published. This information can be simple things like a phone directory or more sensitive information such as market research reports. A good example of a public portal is Yahoo.com although some might argue that in recent years Yahoo has grown beyond just being a portal.
